BLOC offers audio and video equipment that can be booked out by HUM staff and students. This includes:

BLOC supports a range of professional creative software. All of our machines feature Adobe Creative Cloud and AVID Media Composer.

The Creative Practice Lab (room 0.20) is a large space with 20 iMac workstations for training and group work. It features two presenter’s podiums and is lined with four repeater screens for teaching and demonstrations.

When not in use for teaching, The Creative Practice Lab is available to staff and students for self-study and collaborative work.

BLOC’s Radio and Recording studio has everything you need to record podcasts, live radio, interviews and music.

This sound-treated space features an integrated Digital Audio Workstation, a range of microphones, outboard preamps, compressors, and a pair of ATC studio monitors for playback. Pro Tools, Logic Pro X, Adobe Audition and GarageBand software are available for recording, mixing and mastering.

The studio also features a Genelec 5.1 set up (complete with a pro subwoofer) for surround sound mixing and a large screen for dubbing or narrating to video.

BLOC offers nine video editing suites; five group work spaces and four individual suites.

All Edit Suites feature powerful iMacs, dual-screen displays and professional studio monitor speakers.

Video and audio software including Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, Audition, Media Encoder, AVID Media Composer and Pro Tools is available in all suites.

The Media Suite supports Digitisation through a range of facilities. This includes three scanners – two flatbeds, and one with a light lid – that allow users the flexibility to digitise a wide variety of flat items up to A3.

We also provide access to a Kaiser Pro Copy Table. This table uses a digital camera on a special stand and can capture delicate or larger items that cannot be scanned on a normal scanner. Its base area can easily handle work up to 75cm x 45cm.

For 3D scanning, the we provide two ARTEC light scanners (SPIDER and LEO), and supporting computers. These allow users to scan objects in 3D and create models in ARTEC Studio for printing and online publication.

Supporting these facilities, we offer software including Adobe Photoshop, allowing you to edit and annotate the images that are created. ABBYY Finereader, which simplifies working with paper-based documents and PDFs by combining powerful OCR (Optical Character Recognition) and conversion technologies with essential PDF tools, is also available.

The online publication of digitised content is supported via Omeka.net, a specialised solution for curating online collections.

We are also able to assist with digitising legacy media, including vinyl, cassette tapes, VHS and CDs.
